Two cats, two dogs and birds were lost in the blaze that destroyed the 14-by-80-foot trailer home.

LISBON – A 15-year-old Lisbon youth was injured while rescuing his 12-year-old sister from their burning trailer home at 98 Littlefield Road Tuesday afternoon. Several pets died and several were rescued by firefighters.

An investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s Office indicated the fire started from a malfunctioning electrical cord.

The owner of the home, who was identified as Jackie Kennedy, was at work, Fire Chief Sean Galipeau said.

The injured boy had to remove more than a dozen attached stockade fence sections in order to get to his sister’s bedroom window in the smoke-filled trailer home, and in the process sustained a “gash” on his head from a nail, according to Galipeau.

Their names and those of their other two teenage siblings who escaped were not released.

The boy was treated at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center in Lewiston where between 10 and 15 staples were used to close the wound, Galipeau said. He was later released.

The girl and her teenage siblings were not injured, but several pets, including two cats, two dogs and birds died in the fast-moving blaze that destroyed the 14-by-80-foot home. Several other pets that were rescued were transported by the animal control officer.

Galipeau said the four teens were home alone at the time the fire was discovered in a middle bedroom at 3:15 p.m. Two boys and a girl managed to get out, but the 12-year-old girl was trapped in her bedroom.

Four other people also lived in the trailer, the chief said. Their names were not available.

An unidentified firefighter was treated for dehydration.

The trailer home and contents were a total loss, and the Red Cross was assisting the nine occupants in finding shelter Tuesday night.

In addition to E.T. Smith Hose Company of Lisbon and Lisbon Falls Fire Department, Sabattus Fire Department assisted at the scene; Lewiston Fire Department filled in at the Lisbon station and Durham Fire Department filled in at the Lisbon Falls station.
