JAY – Rich Cormier is packing up and heading north to camp.

The Jay man turns 62 on Friday and retires after 27 years as manager of the Jay branch of Franklin Savings Bank.

Well-wishers went to the bank Thursday to shake Cormier’s hand, say goodbye and wish him luck during an open house retirement party.

The bank was decorated with blue and white balloons and photos of Cormier since he started there. A “Happy Retirement” banner hung across the teller stations.

Cormier, originally from Rumford, has been an active member of the community since he moved to Jay.

He was often seen working at the annual car shows at Jay Plaza as a member of the local Rotary.

Prior to becoming a banker in 1976, Cormier was a bookkeeper and managed a furniture store.

“The community has been good to me,” Cormier said.

He’s packing his bags and heading to his camp on Shin Pond outside of Patten.

“I’m going to spend a lot of time at our camp doing what I want to do,” Cormier said. Nelda Bond of East Livermore was on her way into the bank and stopped to say that Cormier was “the best guy we’ve ever known.”

She and her husband, Allie Bond, have done business with Cormier for nearly 30 years.

“I’m going to miss him dearly,” Nelda Bond said.
