1904 – 2003

AUBURN – Agnes E. Scannell, 99, of Schooner Estates, formerly of Central Avenue, Lewiston, died Thursday, Aug. 21, at Clover Health Care Facility.

Born in Ontario, Canada, Jan. 7, 1904, the daughter of Archie and Martha Shearer, she was educated in Ontario schools, graduating from business college.

In 1924 she was a graduate of the Central Maine General Hospital School of Nursing and was then a private duty nurse until 1936 when she married James Scannell.

Upon her husband’s death in September of 1949, she became president and treasurer of the Lewiston Engraving Co. for 20 years, until it was transferred to the Lewiston Sun and Journal.

Mrs. Scannell lived on Central Avenue until 1990, prior to moving to Schooner Estates. She was a member of Central Maine Nurses Alumni, Women’s Hospital Association, Horizon 55, Queen’s Sodality Association and St. Joseph’s Church.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
