1904 – 2003

LEWISTON – Ethel Gertrude Winslow Conant, 98, of New Gloucester, died peacefully in her sleep, Aug. 31, at d’Youville Pavilion.

Born in Nobleboro, on Dec. 15, 1904, the daughter of Sanford and Gertrude Belle Winslow. She was a 1924 graduate of Edward Little High School.

Family, a strong work ethic, and a “Winslow” constitution were the traits that guided her through her life.

She was lucid, witty and always quick to offer a smile right up until the end. Her love of the outdoors included flower gardening and bird watching.

She worked many years for Loring, Short & Harmon the former Berry Paper Co. of Lewiston.

A life member of 50 years of the Order of Eastern Star Pine Cone Chapter 26, a member of Robin Dow, and a member of First Auburn Seniors. She was a member of the Court Street Baptist Church.

She is survived by a daughter, Virginia M. Huntley Stone of New Gloucester; a sister, Viola Bernice Jasper of Eliot; two grandchildren, Gregory R. Stone of Lewiston, George M. Stone of Albion; six great-grandchildren, Amy Finnen of Corvallis, Ore., Adam Stone of Hallowell, Steven Stone of Turner, Christopher Stone of Albion, Jamie Stone of Albion, and Alexander Stone of Lewiston; and a great-great-grandchild, Danelle Finnen of Corvallis, Ore.

She was predeceased by her husbands, Lloyd M. Huntley, William Ittner, and Calvin Conant; 11 brothers and sisters; and a grandson, Robert L. Stone of Lisbon.
