DURHAM – A man was shot early Monday afternoon while cleaning a gun at the Durham Rod and Gun Club on Royalsborough Road.

Maine State Trooper Shawn Labrie identified the man as Walter Bettey, 57, of Freeport. He said Bettey was apparently cleaning a firearm at the club grounds and “put a .40-caliber round through his left thigh.”

He was initially transported to Midcoast Hospital in Brunswick and later transferred to Maine Medical Center in Portland. The incident remains under investigation, Trooper Labrie said.

Bettey was listed in fair condition at the hospital Monday night.
