WINDHAM (AP) – Seven juveniles face charges of aggravated criminal mischief stemming from a weekend vandalism spree that caused thousands of dollars in damage at Anderson Cemetery off River Road.

Gravestones dating back to the early 1800s were tipped over and American flags were broken and thrown to the ground, police said.

Windham Police Officer Paul Cox was on a routine patrol of the cemetery late Friday night when he spotted the damage, along with two vehicles and several juveniles.

Six teenagers from Windham and Buckfield were released in the custody of their parents after being charged with aggravated criminal mischief, interference with a cemetery and criminal trespass. A seventh juvenile was being held at Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland.
