LEWISTON – The Youth Advisory Council will host a “Celebration of Freedom” ceremony at 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, on the steps of City Hall, 27 Pine St.

The event, marking the second anniversary of the 9-11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, will celebrate freedom in America and express thankfulness for family and friends. It also will extend appreciation to people serving in the armed forces, both past and present.

The youth council wants to “celebrate the lives of loved ones and focus on the many positives that the United States of America represents, along with paying respect to the memory of those lost on Sept. 11, 2001,” said a spokeswoman for the group.

Youth council member Kelin Sevit will sing the National Anthem, patriotic words and inspirational thoughts will be shared by members of the youth council and the Lewiston High School ROTC color guard will retire the colors.

The youth council will also present city officials with a plaque in memory of the six Maine people who lost their lives on 9-11: Stephen Gordon Ward, Robert Jalbert, Jacqueline J. Norton, Robert G. Norton, James M. Roux and Robert Allan Schlegel.

An American flag that has flown over the Capitol in Washington, donated to the youth council by U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe, also will be presented to the city.
