Firefighters could be able to move in as soon as Oct. 1.

GREENE – Ahead of schedule, the new fire station may be just three weeks away from being occupied by the town’s volunteer fire department.

Town Manager Stephen Eldridge told the Board of Selectmen Monday night that the Fire Department may take possession of the building as early as Oct. 1. The original completion date was Oct. 15. Little more than painting and the installation of an electrical box remains to be done. The $1.43 million project is being done by Glen Builders of North Conway, N.H.

In related business, the board discussed purchasing an engraved bronze plaque for the foyer of the fire station. It would give permanent recognition to several town officials who were instrumental in the planning and construction of the fire station including the Fire Station Building Committee members. The estimated cost would be $750. The board decided to defer a decision to the building committee.

The new fire station is being built on the site of the old one and the historic Patton School. Both were torn down last year to make room for the new station.

In other business, Eldridge told the board that property tax payments have been slow coming into the town due to the slow economy. The board discussed making the payment to SAD 52 for educating the town’s children two weeks late to allow more tax payments to come in.

In another matter, selectmen appointed Robert Godfrey to the Land Use Ordinance Committee.
