JAY – A ceremony in observance of the National POW-MIA Recognition Day will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday by the Frank L. Mitchell Post 3335 and Ladies Auxiliary.

Second District Congressman Michael H. Michaud will be the guest speaker.

The ceremony will be held at the POW-MIA Remembrance Bridge Monument of All Wars at the entrance of the Riley Road off Route 4.

This is the 11th year for the POW-MIA program, according to Chairman John Dube.

A casket-sized American flag belonging to Pvt. Eugene Terrier, U.S. Army World War II veteran, will be dedicated along with a POW-MIA flag in memory of Joseph Groomes Sr., a former World War II prisoner of war. A state of Maine flag will also be dedicated, Dube says.

Dube explains that the national observance falls on Sept. 19 this year but, because of prior commitments, the local program will be held six days early.

The United Bikers of Maine, Franklin and Androscoggin counties, will hold their POW-MIA run on the traditional third Friday of September, the 19th, when the national ceremony is held.

The 18-mile run from the mall in Turner is in recognition of the original number of Maine POW-MIA’s from the Vietnam War.

The POW-MIA Committee will hold a brief program at 6:30 p.m. that day at the monument in support of the dedication of the bikers who have always supported the issue.
