JAY – In response to a proclamation by President George W. Bush naming Sept. 11 as Patriot Day, a remembrance vigil will be held from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, in Chisholm Square. All community members from any town are welcome.

Firefighters, police, emergency personnel, military members or veterans, whether in uniform or not, are invited to come and remember that day and those who lost their lives.

Participants are welcome to bring an American flag or anything to show their pride in America. The event will be held rain or shine.

Organizers hope that participants will be able to line the sidewalks and area around Chisholm Square. Those who feel unable to stand for an hour are welcome to bring a lawn chair. The group will not block traffic on Main Street.

Organizers remind those attending that this is not a parade or a party but a solemn program to remember those who were killed in the Attack on America Sept. 11, 2001.

Those who plan to attend representing police, fire, EMS, military or veterans who have organizational colors or an Honor Guard and would like to bring them to represent their organization are welcome.

For more information, contact Donald Simoneau at 897-4139 from the American Legion, Richard Therrien 897-4112 from the AmVets, or Neri Simoneau 897-5112 from the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

After the vigil, the Avenue of Flags from Jay High School to Livermore Falls High School will be put back up in remembrance. The Avenue of Flags will stay up until after the POW/MIA Remembrance Day to be held on Sept. 19.
