1925 – 2003

OXFORD – Donald F. Guilford Sr., 78, of Oxford formerly of Norway died Thursday, Sept. 18, in an automobile accident.

“Don” was born in Norway July 26, 1925, the son of Adelbert and Ruth Smith Guilford. He married Louise V. Wentworth in 1944 and she predeceased him in 1979. Throughout his life, he was involved in community services.

He started little league baseball in Norway, worked with the Boy Scouts, and was president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce. He started many programs for the youth of the area such as soapbox derby, junior high dances, and winter sports.

Mr. Guilford also started and coached semi pro baseball and basketball teams to many winning seasons. He not only encouraged his children to be involved in activities, he also taught them to respect others and to be proud of their accomplishments.

He worked at B.E. Cole Shoe Shop in Norway until it closed. He then became a deputy for the Oxford County Sheriff’s Department and later on a police officer for the town of Norway.

From 1984 until his retirement in 1997, he was a custodian at Fryeburg Academy. Since his retirement, he worked for Suburban Security as a highway traffic controller. Mr. Guilford kept beautiful vegetable and flower gardens at his home on Fore St. in Oxford.

He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Louise H. Guilford; one daughter, Darlene Berry; five sons, Tom, Ritchie, Jeffrey, David, and Michael; two stepdaughters, Debra Perry and Diane Lukfin; one stepson, Scott Perry; 22 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Eugene and Richard Guilford; three sisters, Dorothy Austin, Patricia Krapovicky, and Judy Arsenault.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Louise; a son, Don Jr.; a daughter, Pam; two granddaughters, Jill Millett and Lisa Norton; and three brothers, Dellie, Chuck, and Howie.
