1917 – 2003

NORWAY – Elwood Andrews Titus, age 86, of S. Paris died Friday, Sept. 19, at the Stephens Memorial Hospital. He was born in Bryant Pond on Feb. 23, 1917, the son of Leroy and Eva Andrews Titus. He was a graduate of Paris High School in 1936 and the Maine School of Commerce in Auburn during 1937. He married Ruth Corbett on Aug. 17, 1941, and she predeceased him on May 4, 1995.

He faithfully served our country during World War II in the Pacific, specifically in New Guinea, Philippines, and Japan. After the service, he worked with his father at L.W. Titus Store and later owned Titus Motors with his brothers. He had also worked at Goodwin’s Dairy. He was the owner and proprietor of Titus Country Store in Welchville (which more recently was Betsey’s and now the Big Apple) and Titus Texaco in S. Paris. After retirement, he continued working for SAD 17 as a school bus driver for the handicapped until the age of 75.

He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Foster Carroll Post #72 and past commander for two years, a lifetime member of the VFW, a member of the Masonic Lodge #94 in South Paris, a member of SCORE, and a long time active member and deacon emeritus of the First Congregational Church in South Paris.

He is survived by a son Warren Titus and wife Karen of Treasure Island, Fla., a daughter Lynette Gatchell of Norway, four grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, two brothers John Titus Sr. of Norway and Leroy Titus and wife Virginia of Norway, and one sister Gertrude Carroll of Greensboro, N.C.
