1925 – 2003

SOUTH PARIS – Josephine A. (Mason) Brown, 78, died Sept. 23, at Market Square Health Center following a long illness.

She was born in Woodstock on Sept 20, 1925, the daughter of Charles B. Mason Sr. and Georgie M. Thurlow Mason.

She attended local elementary schools in Woodstock and Greenwood, later attending Gould Academy in Bethel for two years and graduated from Woodstock High School in 1943.

During the early 1940’s she worked as a welder building Liberty ships at the South Portland shipyard. During the 1950’s she worked many years at EKCO Housewares in Locke Mills.

After moving to the Oxford Hills area, where she lived for the past 35 years, she worked for Francine Shoe, B.E. Cole and C.B. Cummings in Norway, and later for SAD 17 and Andrews Nursing Home.

She was a member of both the West Paris Grange and Ring-McKeen American Legion Auxiliary in West Paris. She married Sidney O. Bartlett in 1945. On Nov. 12, 1955 she married Ernest E. Brown Sr. of Sumner, who survives her.

She is also survived by all her children, Eldon C. Bartlett of Scarborough, Andrew B. Bartlett of West Bethel, Sally A. Bartlett of Poland, Roberta M. Zinchuck and Robyn J. Cary both of Oxford, Heidi R. Tracy and Ernest E. Brown Jr. both of South Paris; a stepdaughter, Dawn Lee of Yrie, N.C.; four brothers, Robert P. Mason of Georgia, William E. Mason of West Paris, Stuart Mason of South Paris and Wayne S. Mason of Coweta, Okla.; two sisters, Orene Bahre of Statesville, N.C., and Sandra Swan of West Paris; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents; two brothers, Charles B. Mason Jr. and Edmund Mason; a sister, Bessie Carll; and a granddaughter, Wendy Tracy.
