FRYEBURG – Kathy Peterson of Lynn, Mass., won this year’s Fryeburg Fair Skillet Contest by out-tossing 90 contestants in front of the crowd.

Peterson, winner in the 46-64 age class in the contest for women only, won with a 56-foot, 5-inch toss.

Sarah Boyd of Poland finished second with a 41-foot, 1-inch throw while Marian Norwood of Appleton was third.

Fourth place finisher Diane Gushee of Fryeburg actually had the best throw of the day and a record for the event at 64 feet, 8 inches. On her only toss in the finals, the pan slipped out of her hands.

The oldest competitor of the day was Mildred Heath, 94, of East Conway, N.H., who hasn’t missed a fair in the past 72 years. Heath always competes first so she can get to the horse races. This year, she was given flowers in an engraved crystal pitcher.

Each entrant is given two throws with a custom-made skillet provided by the fair. The distance the skillet lands to the right or the left of the center line is deducted from the total distance.

“The skillet contest continues to grow in popularity every year,” said Sue Fuller, who is in charge of the event along with Karen Lynge. “Everyone seems to have a great time and the crowd loves it. This year was the largest group of competitors we’ve ever had.”
