AUBURN – The St. Dominic boys’ soccer team may need a big save from the Maine Principals Association to keep its record and lofty standing intact.
The Sun Journal has learned that the Saints may have to forfeit six wins because of a glitch in the submission of a needed form for a transferring student.
St. Dom’s was ranked third in Western C with a 7-1 record in Heal Points through Sept. 27. All but one of those wins is in jeopardy. If the Saints forfeit those games, they would now be 2-7, significantly changing their playoff hopes and the standings in Western B, C and D.
St. Dom’s principal Mike Welch could not be reached for comment Saturday night, and Athletic Director Bob Boucher did not return calls to the Sun Journal. Coach Lee Hixon declined to comment. The MPA is expected to determine this week whether an appeals process is possible under these circumstances.
A generic letter sent out by the Maine Principals Association recently asked for schools to double-check the proper paperwork for athletes that have transferred. Students must file a form that states the transfer wasn’t for athletic purposes. When St. Dom’s reviewed its files, it was discovered that the paperwork for one player, a non-starter, was incomplete.
Should the forfeits be upheld, the Saints would drop significantly in the standings, forcing them to win most of their games in the final weeks. St. Dom’s hosts North Yarmouth Academy Wednesday.
and also plays Class B schools Fryeburg, Poland and Gray-New Gloucester, opponents that could provide enough points to earn a playoff spot. Since St. Dom’s and NYA, which beat the Saints previously, face schools in three different classes, the forfeits would affect the standings in all Western Maine divisions.
