1921-2003

BRUNSWICK – Joseph E. “Edwy” LeMay, 81, of Harpswell Neck Road, Harpswell, died Tuesday, Oct. 7, at Mid Coast Senior Health Care Center in Brunswick, with his family by his side. Born in Harpswell, Dec. 13, 1921, he was the son of Edgar and Grace M. Moody LeMay.

He attended Harpswell schools. On Nov. 27, 1940, he married Dorothy F. Barnes in Harpswell. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, stationed in Texas and later in Germany, where he participated in the Battle of the Bulge. In 1939, he was employed as a brass molder at Torrey, Roller and Bushing in Bath and later at Doughty Stevens in Boothbay Harbor. In 1954, he was employed as a firefighter at the Navy Fuel Depot in Harpswell and later at the Brunswick Naval Air Station, retiring in 1980 as captain. He was a charter member of the Brunswick Lodge of Elks and a volunteer firefighter for the Harpswell Neck Fire Department for over 50 years, retiring in 1990 as fire chief. He enjoyed playing cribbage, his vegetable garden, his camps in Rangeley and his camp at Upper Dam. In recent years, Mr. and Mrs. LeMay enjoyed spending the winter months in Florida.

Besides his wife of almost 63 years of Harpswell, he is survived by a son, Joseph E. LeMay Jr. of Bangor; a daughter, Kathleen M. Stockford and her husband Clifford D. of Brunswick; three grandsons, Joseph E. LeMay III and his wife Stephanie Erb of Glenburn, William T. LeMay of Cranston, R.I., and Jason A. Stockford of Brunswick; two brothers, Arnold LeMay of Harpswell and Louis LeMay and his wife Thelia of Oakland; a sister, Lillian McManus of Brunswick; and several nieces and nephews.

LEMAY – Joseph E., Died in Brunswick on Oct. 7, 2003. Joseph E. LeMay, age 81 of Harpswell. Friends may visit from 3-5 p.m. on Friday, Oct 10, at the Brackett Funeral Home, 29 Federal St., Brunswick. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, at Elijah Kellogg Church, Harpswell, with the Rev. James Henry officiating. Interment will be at Hillcrest Cemetery, Harpswell.
