AUBURN – A woman was hospitalized Friday after her car and a flatbed truck hauling a pair of Dumpsters collided at Hotel Road and Minot Avenue.

Diane E. Gatchell, 51, of Auburn was listed in fair condition at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston Friday night.

Investigators said Gatchell suffered broken bones and other injuries in the 8:15 a.m. pileup that involved two commercial trucks and Gatchell’s car.

Police said Gatchell was driving south on Hotel Road and turning left onto Minot Avenue when her car and Mack truck driven by James C. Merrill, 32, of Bethel collided.

Merrill, driving a truck and hauling two Dumpsters for Pine Tree Waste Inc., was heading west on Minot Avenue, toward Mechanic Falls, when the vehicles collided, police said.

A witness told investigators Merrill was passing through a green light at the intersection when the vehicles collided, according to a police report.

The collision caused the car and truck to skid 21 feet from the point of impact. The vehicles then slammed into a third rig, a box truck driven east on Minot Avenue by 33-year-old Raymond L. Fleury of Jay.

Fleury was driving a truck for New Hampshire-based Gelco Corp.

Police rerouted traffic while rescue crews freed Gatchell from her mangled vehicle.

While Auburn police began their own investigation, they also called for help from the Maine State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement team.

Police said it is routine to call that agency whenever commercial vehicles are involved in crashes or other mishaps. Both rigs were inspected as part of the investigation, which was continuing Friday night.

Damage to the 2003 Mack was estimated at $2,500; to the 2001 International Harvester driven by Fleury, $5,500; and to Gatchell’s 1993 Toyota, $12,000.
