1919-2003

NORWAY – Norma B. Newton, 84, of Sumner, died Oct. 10, in Norway. She was born in Sumner on September 27, 1919, the daughter of Virgil and Annie (Barrows) Barrett.

She was educated in local schools, graduating from Buckfield High School in 1937 and had been a homemaker most of her life. She married Eldred Newton on June 26, 1938. She was a volunteer at Central Maine Medical Center in her younger years. She was a former member of the West Sumner Grange, a member of the Sumner Mothers Club and a member of the Sumner Congregational Church.

She was an avid music lover and loved to play the piano. She especially enjoyed her family and enjoyed writing to her pen pal, Elizabeth Stallard in Virginia. She was one of the kindest people you could wish to meet.

She is survived by two sons, Allan Newton of East Sumner and Wayne Newton and his wife Karen of Dixfield; one daughter, Lola Newton of Sumner; one sister, Eleanor Davenport of Canton; and four grandchildren and one step-granddaughter.

She was predeceased by her husband Eldred Newton in 1997; a son Gilbert “Gibby” Newton in 1942; and one sister, Virgilyn Cummings in 1998.

Graveside funeral services will be held at the Elmwood Cemetery, Sumner on Wednesday at 1pm.

Memorials in her memory may be made to the Sumner Congregational Church, East Sumner, Maine 04292.
