1918 – 2003

LEWISTON – Elsie May Smith, 85, of Marshwood Nursing Home and formerly a resident of Woodside Apartments, Lisbon Falls, died early Sunday, Oct. 19, at Marshwood nursing home where she had been a patient for the last five years.

She was born in Fayette, Oct. 10, 1918, the daughter of Fred and Bertha (Wright) Hill Lovewell. She was educated in the grammar schools of Fayette and was a 1937 graduate of Monmouth Academy.

On Jan. 20, 1941 she married Alfred L. Smith in Monmouth. Mr. Smith died June 3, 1967. Mrs. Smith was employed in area textile mills as a spinner, area shoe shops as a top sticher and was a nurses aid at Central Maine General Hospital of Lewiston, then later worked in local nursing homes as well as providing home care.

She had been a very active volunteer for and served many years with L.A.C.O. (Food Bank) in Lisbon Falls and Lisbon. Mrs. Smith enjoyed the interests of collecting novelty Owls, watching All Star wrestling and stock car racing and coon hunting, having raised and trained her own coon dogs.

She had raised raccoon’s and donated them to the Gray Animal Farm. She loved life and the out of doors and was always there to lend a helping hand for those in need.

Survivors include five daughters, Joanne B. Nelson of Portage, Mrs. Wesley (Jacqueline M.) Spear of Lisbon Falls, Mrs. James (Elaine F.) Pulk of Lisbon Falls, Mrs. Dennis (Montress M.) Hartford of North Monmouth and Mrs. Wayne (Gail A.) Baker of Leeds; five sons, Bill E. Lovewell and his wife Bette of Las Vegas, Nev., Alfred L. Smith and his wife Dotty of Lisbon Falls, James M. Smith and his wife Patricia of Bowdoinham, Blaine L. Smith and his companion Bambi of Leeds and Aldred B. Smith and his wife Pamela of Bowdoin; several grand and great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces, nephews; and many friends that she cherished.

She was predeceased by a son, Fred H. Smith in 1992; and a sister, Mrs. Lillian Emmons in 1982.
