LEWISTON – Only voters in two city wards will get a choice for City Council next week. Five of the city’s seven wards are home to incumbent city councilors who have no challengers for their seats. Those councilors, in Wards 2, 3, 4, 6 and 7, are virtually guaranteed their seats.

In Ward 1, voters will choose either former state Rep. Stavros Mendros or Lewiston School Committee member John Butler to succeed outgoing Councilor Roger Philippon. Ward 1 is the northernmost ward in the city, running from downtown north along the Androscoggin River.

Ward 5 voters will either re-elect Councilor Marc Mason to another term or replace him with former Lewiston School Superintendent Robert Connors. Ward 5 is a small, central ward just on the outskirts of the downtown and from about Central Avenue east to East Avenue.

Polls for all city wards are scheduled to open at 7 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4, and close at 8 p.m. Absentee ballots are available at Lewiston City Hall now through Election Day. They must be returned to the city clerk’s office by the poll closing on Nov. 4.

Candidates on TV

Voters who missed either of the Chamber of Commerce voter forums last week will have several chances to catch them before the polls open.

Great Falls TV will be showing both forums Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday this week.

The Oct. 22 debate over Questions 1A, 1B and 1C will be broadcast at noon, 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Wednesday; and at 4:30 p.m. Friday. That debate featured Mechanic Falls’ Town Manager Dana Lee advocating for Question 1A, state Rep. David Lemoine of Old Orchard Beach advocating for Question 1B and Bob Stone advocating for question 1C.

The Lewiston City Council candidate forum on Oct. 23 will be aired at 1:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday and at 6 p.m. Friday. That debate features candidates for Lewiston Wards 1 and 5, and the city’s three mayoral candidates answering questions about the city.
