Randy Perry Jr. fell asleep at the wheel.

ADDISON (AP) – A 23-year-old Harrington man who had fallen asleep in a pickup truck drowned after the vehicle slid into the bay from a boat landing where it was parked. Another man who was also in the truck survived.

Randy Perry Jr.’s body was recovered from the water after police were called early Thursday, the Bangor Daily News said.

Only the tip of the truck’s antenna was showing. State Trooper Barry Curtis said the water was 10 to 12 feet deep.

“The truck was parked on an incline and it rolled into the tidal water,” Curtis said, adding that the truck had been left in neutral.

Byron Grant of Columbia, a passenger in the Ford Ranger truck that belonged to Perry, escaped the sinking truck and ran to a nearby friend’s house to call for help. Curtis said the water was around Grant’s neck when he woke up, and he did not remember how he got out.

Grant told police the two friends had been riding around Wednesday evening visiting friends in the area before going to the boat landing along Basin Road to sleep.

Perry worked as a lobsterman in the area.
