The incident took place at the Dudley Square station.

BOSTON (AP) – One person was killed and four others injured Wednesday in a shooting at a city bus station, and a gunman was in custody, police said

Boston Police Officer Nadine Taylor-Miller said one person was killed, two were left with life-threatening injuries, and another person was in critical condition. A fifth person was grazed in the leg, she said.

Details about the gunman were not immediately known. However, authorities said the person was in custody and that police had recovered the weapon.

The shooting took place Wednesday afternoon at the Dudley Square bus station in the city’s Roxbury neighborhood, she said.

It wasn’t immediately clear if the incident took place inside or outside the station.

However, television footage of the crime scene showed orange cones placed in spots outside the station.

Luis Santana, 48, who has works at Joe’s Sub Shop near the bus station, said the shots rang out shortly after he arrived at work at 3 p.m.

He was in the back of the shop, near the kitchen sink, when he heard shots, and then saw panicked bystanders running into the shop for cover.

“I heard the first shot and then heard four others but that’s it. I didn’t go outside,” he told The Associated Press. “People were running everywhere, screaming. It was like Halloween. Their faces … they were all scared.”

A woman told WHDH-TV, Channel 7, that she was inside the sub shop when the shooting took place.

The unidentified woman said she heard a gunshot and saw a man, shot in the head, drop his cell phone and run toward another nearby store near the bus station. She said she then saw another man take cover inside the sub shop.

“We all took cover because we didn’t know if the person doing the shooting was going to come into the sub shop,” she said.
