LEWISTON – Time is running short for Lewiston road crews, thanks to last week’s rainy weather.

Public Works Director Dave Jones said his crews are playing catch-up trying to finish this year’s paving projects. Jones said he has 10 streets prepped and ready to be paved before Thanksgiving.

“If the weather holds out, we plan to do several next week,” Jones said. “All the roads we planned to do last week got put on hold because of the rain. We have people calling us up asking when their roads are going to get finished. Those roads have been ready for us for weeks, but we haven’t been able to get to them.”

Jones said crews should put down asphalt this week on Fair Street, Nell Street, the Stetson Road extension, Pineview Street, Balsam Street, Michaud Avenue and Deer Road. They should get to College Street, Crowley Road and Dyer Road next week, he said.

“Everything is ready,” Jones said. “Now we’re just hoping the weather will let us finish up. We lost four days last week because of the rain. That makes it difficult when you are close.”

Jones said contractors are also continuing work on Plourde Parkway between Goddard and River Roads. That work began Saturday and should wrap up Nov. 15.

The road will be closed to all but Goddard Road businesses, he said. All other cars will be redirected down River Road.

In Auburn, city contractors will begin reclaiming 2,500 feet of Garfield Road, between Perkins Ridge and Valley View Drive.

“Eventually, we want to do the entire road,” said Pavement Management Technician Paul Niehoff. “Right now, though, we’re most concerned with cleaning up one of the really bad sections. It’s just basically falling apart.”

Crews will also try to finish work on South Main Street and roads off Western Avenue on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Those projects will depend on the weather as well.

“If the weather is good, we’ll concentrate on the maintenance work on South Main Street,” he said. “If it isn’t, we’ll put down the base pavement on Goodrich, Summit and Merrill streets.”
