LEWISTON – Fans looking at the roster card over the weekend might have noticed an unfamiliar name sitting in the lineup Monday.
Brett Woodland, a 13th-round draft pick of the Maineiacs in this season’s QMJHL entry draft, played against Moncton.
“He played well for us when he needed to,” said Maineiacs’ assistant coach Ed Harding. “He was a local kid, from the Halifax area, and that’s where he was playing, so we scooped him up for a day to help us out.”
Woodland replaced Alex Bourret, who went to the hospital Saturday night during the game against Halifax after getting hit in the face with a puck.
“It was obviously cut,” said Harding, “but then they noticed there was a slight crack in the jaw line next to his mouth, so they sent him to the hospital to have surgery. The whole Halifax staff was great about everything.”
The incident, according to Harding, seemed innocent enough, when a puck was flipped into the zone. The puck ricocheted off of a stick, bounced off of another player and into Bourret’s face, cutting him on the right side.
“As far as him coming back, I don’t know,” said Harding.
“I do know that he will most likely be wearing some sort of face shield when he does return. We wouldn’t want him to catch an elbow in the face or anything an jeopardize anything else.”
Marc-André Cliche is now listed as day-to-day after a shoulder injury kept him out of the lineup over the weekend. According to Harding, Cliche will be evaluated this week and may be given the OK to return as early as Friday night.
The rest of the team, save for a few nicks and bruises, is healthy and should all be able to skate this weekend.
Woodland, meanwhile, has returned to his Junior AAA team.
Around the league
Sidney Crosby is at it again.
The Rimouski phenom has once again garnered the QMJHL award for offensive player of the week, marking his fourth award this season. Crosby had three goals and four assists in just two games last week, and had a hand in seven of the Océanic’s nine goals. Crosby was a plus-4 on the weekend, and has now tallied 53 points in 25 games this season.
This week’s defensive player of the week was Ervins Mustukovs of the Drummondville Voltigeurs. As the team’s goaltender, Mustukovs recorded one win and one tie with a 0.96 goals-against average and a .965 save percentage. Mustukovs stopped 55 of the 57 shots he faced against Val d’Or and Shawinigan.
