LEWISTON – Local youths will display their artwork in an opening reception from 3 to 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 24, at Bates College.

Sponsored by the Bates College Center for Service-Learning and the Lewiston Housing Authority’s Youth Enrichment Opportunity Program, the exhibit will be shown in Chase Hall on Campus Avenue.

The public is invited to attend free of charge.

Youth Enrichment Opportunity is a visual and performing arts program funded with Section 8 Reserves of the Lewiston Housing Authority and a Federal Drug Elimination Grant.

The 12-year-old organization is dedicated to the promotion of the arts for youths ages 5 to 18 who live in the Lewiston Housing Authority’s public housing. The program builds self-esteem through learning, performing and exhibiting.

The LHA student artists study with art coordinator Sissi Ventrone, a veteran Auburn- and Norway-based art teacher. Tailoring the program to her students’ individual abilities, she teaches students in mixed age groups so older children serve as role models for younger ones.

The Bates show is important for her students, said Ventrone. “All artists must develop the courage to exhibit in public.”

The exhibition will continue through Dec. 5. For more information, phone 207-786-8273 or 207-783-8539.
