1931 – 2003

LISBON FALLS – Joseph M. Mendes, MD, 72, died Wednesday, Dec. 17, at his home.

He was born Jan. 23, 1931, in Webster, Mass., the son of Joseph C. and Mary Priestly Mendes. He grew up in Topsham, graduated from St. Dominic’s High School and the University of Ottawa School of Medicine in Ottawa, Canada. On July 4, 1956, he married Louise C. Tetreault of Brunswick.

He actively supported Lisbon Little League and Babe Ruth baseball. Dr. Mendes founded, sponsored and coached the Lisbon High School hockey team and also supported the local Boy Scout troops. He enjoyed golf, fishing, boating and gardening.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Louise C. Mendes; two sons, Joseph A. of Buxton and his wife Mary, Peter M. of Brunswick and his wife Kathryn; three daughters, Susan M. Brown and her husband Robert of Bowdoinham, Kathleen M. Dudzie and her husband Derek of West Bath, Martha J. Grzyb and her husband Walter of Lovell; nine grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his brother, Francis of Harpswell.
