PORTLAND (AP) – Cumberland County Sheriff Mark Dion announced Wednesday that he has suspended a deputy who arrested a Sebago woman in November who later died in police custody.

The attorney general’s office has cleared Dion’s officers of any criminal wrongdoing in the death of Elaine McGeehan, 23, who was arrested in November on a domestic violence assault charge at her mother’s home in Baldwin.

McGeehan was in medical distress when the cruiser arrived at the jail after the 35-minute trip to Portland. She was later taken to Maine Medical Center, where she died.

The sheriff said an internal investigation has focused on whether McGeehan should have been taken to the hospital before going to jail. The deputy’s name has not been released.

It is not yet clear what killed McGeehan.
