1925 – 2004

PORTLAND – Charlotte Bridgham Wallace, 78, of Gray, died Thursday, Jan.8, at Maine Medical Center after a brief illness.

She was born Sept. 12, 1925 in Springfield, Mass. A 1947 graduate of Bates College, she received a Master of Education degree in 1961 from Springfield College and taught second grade in Springfield for 10 years. When she moved to Maine in 1970 she taught second grade in Falmouth for nine years. During this time she developed and implemented a systemwide curriculum on the history of Falmouth. This led to the publication of her book “E Pluribus Unum: A Story of Falmouth, Maine,” which her husband, Donald, illustrated.

In the mid-1980s, she wrote regularly for the Falmouth Forecaster and Falmouth Historical Society.

As a teacher, she was known for her creative, engaging teaching style, and her students still remember her enthusiasm. After retirement, she continued to write books including personal histories, a cookbook, and a book of Yankee sayings. Those who knew her were deeply touched by her kind and nurturing spirit.

Charlotte was a member of Gray Congregational Church for many years and a volunteer for the Maine Audubon Society.

She is survived by her husband, Donald Erskine Wallace; her children, Eric Leslie Woodard of Marion, Ind., Diane Woodard Dynia of New Haven, Conn., and Linda Woodard of Gray; a niece, Jan Beatty, of Simsbury, Conn.; step-daughters, Marcella Brown and Rebekah MacDonald, both of Gray; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her parents, F. Nelson Bridgham and Marie Rice Bridgham; and her sister, Harriette Bridgham Beatty.
