BANGOR, Maine (AP) – Eastern Pulp and Paper Corp. prepared to shut down its mills in Brewer and Lincoln on Friday.

The closure would displace up to 750 workers and could be permanent.

According to Doug Walsh, manager of Lincoln Pulp and Paper Co. and Eastern Fine Paper Co., most of the employees were notified Thursday night about the shutdown. The rest of the workers were to be told Friday.

Walsh said the mills have been unable to secure supplies and the parent company has been unsuccessful in securing an emergency $1.5 million loan from Congress Financial Corp. of New York.

“Our hope would be that it’s on a temporary, short-term basis,” Walsh said. “I have no information at this point to say anything different.”

Eastern Pulp and Paper has been under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection since September 2000.
