LEWISTON – U.S. Rep. Tom Allen will speak at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, at Lewiston-Auburn College, Room 103. Allen will discuss “A Path to Sustainable Economic and Environmental Policy.” The talk is free and the public is invited.

Rotary speaker

LEWISTON – Lewiston City Administrator Jim Bennett will be the speaker at noon Thursday, Jan. 29, at the Lewiston-Auburn Rotary Club meeting at the Ramada Inn. Bennett will discuss the Gateway projects and other developments expected in Lewiston.

Anyone interested in the topic or in knowing more about Rotary is invited to attend. The cost of the luncheon is $7.

Honor chaplains

LEWISTON – Area veterans and the public are invited to a 9 a.m. service on Sunday, Feb. 1, at Trinity Episcopal Church to honor four U.S. Army chaplains.

The chaplains gave up their life jackets to shipmates in the sinking of the USS Army Transport Dorchester off the coast of Greenland on Feb. 3, 1943, by a German submarine.

Of the 902 men aboard the Dorchester, 672 died and 230 survived. The ship sank in 27 minutes. Survivors told how the four chaplains, arms locked in prayer, went down with the ship.

LEWISTON – Dr. Paul Fortier Chapter 52, Association Canado-Americaine, will meet at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 2, in the Senior Citizens Room of the Multi-Purpose Center.

Following the group’s monthly business meeting, ACA member Paul Farrell will give a presentation on his experiences while working for 32 years for the Maine Central Railroad as a telegraph operator and freight agent before retiring in 1978.

His talk will include colorful anecdotes as well as a brief history of the railroad and its place in Maine commerce and transportation.

The meeting will end with refreshments and a time for socializing. More information on the event or the Association Canado-Americaine is available by calling Chapter President Gerard Legare at 783-0606.

Area widows

LISBON FALLS – The Lisbon Area Widow Fellowship will meet on Monday, Feb. 2, at the Lisbon United Methodist Church, School Street. The gathering will begin at 11:30 a.m. followed by a potluck lunch at noon. All interested widows in the area are invited.

Weight loss

AUBURN – The University of Maine Cooperative Extension will host a program on weight loss at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3, at the Auburn United Methodist Church, 439 Park Ave.

Sandy Fletcher, RN, computer software instructor at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center, will discuss “Tips and Tricks for Successful Weight Loss.” The tips will also be useful for helping diabetics to maintain or gain control of their diabetes.

All are welcome.

OES meeting

AUBURN – Mount Olivet Chapter 29, Order of the Eastern Star, will meet at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3, at the Masonic Hall, Turner Street, to honor secretaries and treasurers. All Eastern Star members are welcome. Dianna Carr and Helen Shelton will provide refreshments.

AUBURN – The Frank W. Hulett VFW Past Presidents Club met at the home of Mary Lawlor on Jan. 7 when election of officers was held.

Officers are: president, Linda Pearl; senior vice president, Lillian Deschene; junior vice president, Joan Hebert; treasurer, Mary Lawlor; secretary, Ellen Broas; and publicity, Lucille Ray.

The next meeting will be Wednesday, Feb. 4, at the home of Joan Hebert.
