AUGUSTA – Joseph B. Faucher, a freshman at Cony High School, has won first place in the state Voice of Democracy contest.

The annual audio essay contest, sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars, is designed to foster patriotism by giving high school students in grades nine through 12 an opportunity to compete for scholarships.

Faucher is the son of Barda Leavitt and Richard Faucher of Augusta. Grandparents are Arnold and Janice Leavitt of Auburn and Anna Faucher of Lewiston and the late Edward Faucher. Arnold Leavitt is a member of VFW Post 1603 in Auburn.

Faucher is a member of the Cony Math Team, Junior Classical League (Latin Club), the Key Club and plays the guitar. As the state winner, he will travel to Washington, D.C., in March to participate in the national contest.
