1919 – 2004

LEWISTON – Russell D. Liddle Sr., 85, of 540 College St., Lewiston died Monday, Jan. 26, at Montello Manor Nursing Home.

He was born in Davenport, Iowa, on Jan. 5, 1919, the son of Ralph E. and Cydia (Hopp) Liddle and had been a resident of this community since 1997.

He was educated in Davenport schools and was a graduate of Davenport High School in the class of 1937.

He was a World War II Veteran with the 194th Field Artillery Battalion of the U.S. Army in the European Theatre of Operations having served in North Africa, Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, Anzio and in the Rhineland Campaigns.

He was employed at Brady & Palmer Printing Co. in New York for 40 years until his retirement in 1984.

Mr. Liddle was a member of the Masonic Lodge 992 of Queens Village, member of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, VFW and American Legion and also a member of the 40 & 8 Club of the American Legion all of New York. He was also a Scout Master in New York City.

He is survived by his wife, the former Bessie Hildebrand, whom he married on July 11, 1942 of Lewiston; three sons, John E. Liddle and his wife Catherine of Horseheads, N.Y., Russell D. Liddle Jr. and his wife Judy of Rockport, Mass., and Mark E. Liddle and his wife Sheryl of Redhook, N.Y.; two daughters, Shirley Ann Davison and her husband Richard of Edgecomb, and Mary Elizabeth Polchaninoff and her husband Michael of Newington, Conn.; 16 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
