1931-2004

RUMFORD – Joseph P. DeFilipp, 72, of 329 Pine St. passed away Saturday, Jan. 31, at Rumford Hospital, surrounded by his family after a short illness.

He was born in Rumford, Nov. 16, 1931, the son of Germano and Anna Loida DeFilipp. He graduated from Stephens High School, class of 1950. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was employed for more than 40 years retiring in 1991. He married Doris T. Mailhot on Jan. 26, 1952, at St. John’s Church.

Mr. DeFilipp was a member of St. Athanasuis-St. John’s Parish, Sons of Italy Goriziette Lodge #467 Napoleon Ouellette American Legion Post #24 of Rumford and Oakdale Country Club of Mexico. He enjoyed his family, especially his grandchildren. His hobbies included working at the Monday night bingo at the Sons of Italy, cribbage, golf, bocce, playing cards and watching The Price is Right.

He is survived by: his wife of 52 years, Doris; four daughters and sons-in-law, Kathryn and Lee Gallant, Debra Buotte, Andrea and John Flaherty, all of Rumford, Lisa and Mark Averill of Standish; a son, Steven and his wife, Diane, of Portland; his grandchildren, Angela and her husband, John Madigan, Jason and Jennifer Buotte, Craig and Kaitlyn DeFilipp, Karen Flaherty, Samantha Jo Averill; his step-grandchildren, Jessica Flaherty, Brad and Brittany Gallant, and Jane Clukey; a sister, Rose Gallant and husband, Thomas, of Rumford; two brothers, Pat and wife, Aldona DeFilipp, Vito and wife, Frances DeFilipp, all of Mexico; two sisters-in-law, Fannie and Andrea DeFilipp, both of Auburn; and a brother-in-law, James Perry of Rumford.

He was predeceased by an infant daughter, Karen DeFilipp, two sisters, Antoinette Umbro and Mary Perry, three brothers, Dominic, Salvatore and John DeFilipp.
