SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Jonathan Kaye carried one of the lightest resumes among the contenders in the FBR Open, and still got to hoist the heaviest hardware.

Kaye, who earned his first PGA Tour title last year in Harrison, N.Y., after 194 starts without a victory, shot a 4-under 67 Sunday and won by two strokes over Chris DiMarco.

This time, Kaye went only 12 tournaments between wins. He finished at 18-under 266 and earned $936,000 – more than he had in all but three of his nine previous years on tour – to take the top spot on the money list for the first time at $1,292,944.He handled the pressure of playing alongside previous Phoenix winners Phil Mickelson and DiMarco, getting a firsthand view of his partners’ struggles.

DiMarco bogeyed the 16th and 17th holes, and Mickelson bogeyed his last three, leaving Kaye smiling as he approached the 18th green.

He parred out, rolling a 28-foot first putt within tap-in distance.

They are expected to return for Olympic qualifying beginning Feb. 25 in Costa Rica.

In the other game, Sweden beat Canada 3-1.

The four teams are playing a round-robin format. The U.S. squad, which beat Sweden 3-0 Friday, leads on goal differential. China downed Canada 2-1 in its opener. The Canadians are without a point.

“To play China, to tie them, on the road in the middle of a tournament under the fatiguing factors, I’m pleased,” U.S. coach April Heinrichs said.

Fan Yunjie is China’s emerging star following the retirement last year of Sun Wen, a past FIFA player of the year and a member of the team that lost to the United States in the 1999 Women’s World Cup final.

“We think China is one of the best teams in the world,” Heinrichs said. “We learn something every time we play them.”

In the Sweden-Canada game, Malin Mostrum, Victoria Svensson and Therese Sjogran scored for the Swedes, the runner-up to Germany in last year’s Women’s World Cup. Christine Sinclair had Canada’s goal.

“It was very important to win for our self-confidence,” Swedish coach Marika Domanski Lyfors said.

The Swedes were cheered by a small contingent of Swedish fans who traveled from Hong Kong for the game.

“I would love to win the overall World Cup, but I have not included it in my plans,” Maier said. “It is my comeback season and I am actually surprised about leading the standings.”

Raich crashed and sustained a concussion that might force him from next weekend’s racing, his team said.

Maier clinched the super-G title after five of seven races. He has 420 points while Norway’s Lasse Kjus, out for the season with a knee injury, has 230 and Rahlves 218.
