AUBURN – TJ’s Restaurant at 2 Great Falls Plaza will host an art exhibit opening featuring the recent paintings of Robert J. Gibson of Lewiston from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6. The paintings are part of a series of still lifes that Gibson has been working on for the last several years.

“My work is a constant exploration into form and color, looking deeply into the nature of things. I am drawn to color and am always intrigued by what happens when light illuminates what I see,” Gibson said.

After seeing some Italian masters’ paintings in a quick trip to the Louvre recently, Gibson said, “I’ve become aware of the importance of deep shadow and its role in contrasting and creating luminous color.”

Although his paintings are contemporary in look they rely heavily on a fundamental foundation of drawing. Combining observation with improvisation and intuition, Gibson employs brilliant and subtle colors in combination to create compositions that are unique and striking.

The exhibit will remain at TJ’s through May 3.
