1907 – 2004

RANGELEY – Atherton J. Mitchell, 96, of Rangeley, died late Thursday evening at his home.

He was born June 6, 1907, in Rangeley, a son of Isaac W. and Ellen Mitchell and received his education in local schools.

Mr. Mitchell was a painter and paperhanger and worked in many Rangeley area homes during his lifetime. He learned the craft, along with his two brothers, while working for his father. Mr. Mitchell spent many winters at the old Franklin County Memorial Hospital doing maintenance painting.

He met his wife Marion there, to whom he was married for 63 years. He was a member of the International Order of the Odd Fellows and was district cribbage champion.

He is survived by two daughters, Janet M. O’Neil and her husband Dennis of Westborough, Mass., and Beverley A. Walker and her husband, Jack of Ann Arbor, Mich.; a sister-in-law, Marjorie Goodwin of New Sharon; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by brothers, George and Coleman Mitchell; and his wife, Marion Gaskell Mitchell.
