AUGUSTA – The Maine Council of Trout Unlimited announces it is seeking applicants for a statewide co-ed conservation camp. “Maine TU Trout Camp” will be held June 20 to 25 at Evergreen Campground in Solon on the banks of the Kennebec River.

It is open to boys and girls age 14 to 17 and will feature classroom and on-the-water instruction by council volunteers and professionals.

Students will learn ecology, environmental and fisheries conservation issues plus water sampling, fly-casting and fly-fishing techniques. Some of the tailored camp sessions will include fly-casting, knot-tying, fly-tying, trout life cycle, trout dissection, field trips, environmental impacts on trout, wading safety and stream etiquette.

The camp is made possible by a grant from LL Bean and is supported by Patagonia, Fly Fishing in Maine and the seven Maine Trout Unlimited chapters. Applicants have until April 1 to submit an essay on why they want to go to Trout Camp as well as one teacher recommendation.

For more information and an online application go to www.troutcamp.tumaine.org/ or call Chairman Greg Ponte at 724-2861.
