LEWISTON – Area veterans organizations will meet at 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, at the Lewiston side of the Longley Bridge in the Yvon’s Car Wash parking lot.

The group will march to the center of the downriver side of the bridge for a ceremony commemorating the sinking of the battleship USS Maine in Havana Harbor, Cuba. Out of 328 enlisted men and 22 officers, only 85 survived the Feb. 15, 1898, attack.

Jerry DerBoghosian, USS Canberra Reunion Association, will give the invocation and those assembled will sing the National Anthem. The names of the crew members from Maine will be read before “Taps” is sounded and a wreath is thrown into the Androscoggin River. The ceremony will close with “God Bless America.”

The service, which will be held regardless of the weather, is open to the public. For more information, call DerBoghosian at 782-5700 or 353-7435.
