1922 – 2004

Lewiston – Joseph “Joe” Albert Tufts Jr., 81, died Feb. 14, at Russell Park Rehabilitation and Living Center.

He was born March 25, 1922 in Ellsworth, the son of Joseph A. and Bessie A. Carter Tufts Sr.

He was a United States Army Veteran serving during World War II in the 100th Infantry Division.

He was a graduate of the University of Maine at Orono with a B.A. in music education, minoring in mathematics. He taught music for 35 years in the towns of Lincoln, Houlton and Millinocket.

He had been an avid hunter and fisherman.

He was a member of the David A. Hooper Lodge #201 A.F. & A.M. of Sullivan.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years Alice B. Perkins Tufts; two sons, Joseph A. Tufts III and his wife Janet of Scarborough, and Timothy R. Tufts and his wife Irene of Hancock; one daughter, Mary E. Brushwein and her husband Philip of Danville; two grandchildren, Elizabeth Brushwein, and Todd A. Tufts and his wife Andrea; and two great-grandchildren, Clelia and Macin Tufts.

He will also be remembered by a special friend, Anna Pomroy of Hancock.
