BUCKFIELD – Selectmen Tuesday night set March 2 as the date for a special town meeting to ask voters to fund legal fees to deal with illegal junkyards. The meeting will be held at Buckfield High School at 7 p.m.

The warrant will have two articles after first choosing a moderator for the meeting. Article 2 asks voters if they will appropriate money and authorize the Board of Selectmen to take legal action against junkyards. Selectmen recommend appropriating $10,000. Article 3 is to see if voters authorize an overdraft in the 2002-03 legal fees account, which is recommended by Selectmen.

In other news, selectmen approved a sign design for the new town garage submitted by David Sherburne. The sign will be mounted on the west side of the building.

Dunn said she had spoken with the new owners of CF Wells, Tom Wallace and Alan Chesney. They say they can have the town storage building empty by July 1 when the town would be using the building again. The building had been rented for storage by CF Wells. There is some damage and Wallace and Chesney say they will pay for damage done by the storage.

There will be an informational meeting on road surveys at 7 p.m. March 30 to poll residents on three options regarding road surveys. One option is to establish a reserve fund to set aside money for road surveys when needed. The second option is to annually incorporate funds into the summer roads maintenance program to survey specific roads until all have been surveyed, and the third option is to simply call a special town meeting when a road needs to be surveyed.

Selectmen approved Glen Holmes and Steve Campbell to represent Buckfield on the SAD 39 Budget Committee.

A list of seven people were approved to have their names submitted as nominations for Democratic ballot clerks. They are: Lynda Bell, Priscilla Bennett, Joanne Bly, Rosita Friel, Shirley Lovejoy, Patricia Meader and Mary Miclon.

The Board was given a list of questions that Sumner selectmen intend to ask at the Feb. 24 meeting in Sumner with Susan Gendron, state Education Commissioner; a staff assistant to U.S. Sen. Susan Collins; state Rep. Rosita Gagne-Friel, D-Buckfield; and William Shuttleworth, superintendent of SAD 39, concerning state-required spending for schools. Hartford and Buckfield selectmen will be attending the meeting.
