1908 – 2004

JONESPORT – Gertrude S. Mitchell, 95, died peacefully on Thursday, Feb. 12, at the Sunrise Health Care Facility, where she had resided for the past several months.

Born in Machias, July 28, 1908, to Augustus and Joann (Strout) Stevens, she graduated from Machias High School and Washington State Normal School (now University of Maine, Machias).

She was the register of probate in Machias and later served in the probate office in Auburn. After leaving that position, she accepted a position with the law firm, Linnell, Choate and Webber, where she continued until her retirement in 1972.

Mrs. Mitchell was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution National Society (DAR). Her retirement years were spent in her home at Sandy River Beach. She will be remembered as a loving mother, an avid and accomplished bridge player and a relentless home improvement visionary.

Survivors include two sons, Peter and his wife, Jeanne of Yarmouth and Gerald Jr. and his wife, Karla of La Mirada, Calif.; grandchildren, Jonathan and his wife, Erica, Steven and his wife, Jennifer, Gerald III and his wife, Melissa, Benjamin and Lyle; a great-granddaughter, Sofia; she also leaves through marriage two additional grandchildren, Tonja Pompey and her husband, Mike and Tara; as well as a great-grandson, Michael Pompey Jr.

She was predeceased in 1978 by her husband of 39 years, Gerald R. Mitchell; and in 1984 by her daughter-in-law, the former Denise C. Croteau.
