EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.- The NBA record for the best start to a coaching career now belongs to a 33-year-old who was not good enough to play for his high school team.
Lawrence Frank posted his 10th straight victory, riding Jason Kidd’s 58th career triple-double and big games by Richard Jefferson and Rodney Rogers in a 98-92 win over the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday night.
Frank had shared the record for best coaching start with Kurt Rambis of the 1998-99 Lakers and Buddy Jeannette of the 1947-48 Baltimore Bullets.
Magic 90, Jazz 77
ORLANDO, Fla. – Tracy McGrady scored 17 of his 43 points in the third quarter for his second straight 40-point game, and the Orlando Magic snapped an eight-game losing streak with a 90-77 win over the Utah Jazz on Wednesday night.
Juwan Howard added 20 points and nine rebounds, and Gordan Giricek had 15 points. Both players have been mentioned prominently in trade talks; the NBA’s trading deadline is Thursday afternoon.
Mavericks 114, Cavs 98
CLEVELAND – Michael Finley scored 23 points and Steve Nash added 20 and 10 assists, leading the Dallas Mavericks to a 114-98 win Wednesday night over the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Scott Williams went 7-for-8 from the field in the 14-year veteran’s first start for Dallas, which signed him off waivers last month from Phoenix.
Spurs 86, Raptors 82
TORONTO – Tim Duncan scored 26 points and tied a season-high with 21 rebounds as the San Antonio Spurs won their sixth straight, 86-82 over the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday night.
Toronto star Vince Carter didn’t return after being helped off the court after injuring his left ankle with 7:46 left in the fourth quarter. Carter landed awkwardly after going up for a jumper. He remained down for several minutes clutching the ankle before two teammates and the trainer helped him to the locker room.
Pistons 102, Bucks 98
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – Richard Hamilton scored 23 points and Chauncey Billups added 20 as the Detroit Pistons ended a six-game losing streak with a 102-98 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday night.
Corliss Williamson scored 15 points and Ben Wallace added 11 points, 15 rebounds and eight blocks as the Pistons won for the first time since Feb. 2.
