PORTLAND – The jazz trio Ergo will perform at the Starbird Recital Hall on Friday, Feb. 27.

Led by trombonist-composer Brett Sroka, Ergo’s other members are drummer Damion Reid and keyboardist Carl Maguire. They play with an electro-acoustic sound and a wide-open improvisational approach.

The Maine Jazz Alliance is bringing this trio of talented musicians to Starbird Recital Hall. Their performance will feature original music from Sroka’s acclaimed debut CD, “Hearsay,” as well as new works.

Reid and Sroka met in Boston in 1999 and quickly became friends and musical cohorts. Later both moved to New York City.

Sroka sought out pianist Maguire to collaborate after hearing his debut CD, “Floriculture.”

Sroka, Reid, and Maguire came together in the summer of 2003 – and Ergo was born. Since then, they’ve been working extensively. Writer Thomas Staudter noted that they’ve “joined in a trio with keyboardist Carl Maguire, who mostly plays the Rhodes electric piano, and drummer Damion Reid, and judging from a recent set at the Cornelia Street Café in Manhattan Sroka’s music is more interesting than ever. The improvisation stretches more readily in different directions…”

Tickets are $10, $8 for alliance members. They’re available in Portland at Starbird Music, 772-2733, and Books Etc., 774-0626, or in Brunswick at Macbeans Music, 729-6513.
