MUNNSVILLE, N.Y. (AP) – A Samaritan was killed in a traffic accident after trying to help a milk truck driver who slid off an icy road.

Richard Werthman, 41, was hit around 8:30 a.m. Saturday by an oncoming car while trying to stop traffic on a hill after witnessing a milk tanker stuck in a snow bank, said Madison County sheriff’s Capt. James Lundrigan.

The driver, Tammy Harrington, 42, had reached the crest of the hill when she saw Werthman flagging her down. When Harrington hit the brakes, she lost control of the car and jumped out of the vehicle, Lundrigan said.

Werthman, who was standing on a curve near the bottom of the hill, was pronounced dead at the scene.

“He was just trying to stop traffic,” said Sgt. Patrick Wrafter. “He was being a good Samaritan.”

No one was behind the wheel when the car struck Werthman, who could not get out of the way because of the ice, Lundrigan said.

No tickets were issued, but the accident was under investigation.
