LEWISTON – Gov. John Baldacci is expected to reveal the locations of his Pine Tree development zones Thursday at 2:30 p.m. during a press conference at the Bates Mill.

Pine Tree Zones are expected to spur economic development by offering incentives and tax breaks to new and growing manufacturing, banking or high-tech businesses. Baldacci made the establishment of Pine Tree Zones an economic priority.

He earmarked four areas – Androscoggin Valley, Aroostook, Penobscot and Washington counties – that would receive the designations. Other Maine counties would compete for four other zones.

Hundreds of applications have been submitted to the Department of Economic and Community Development. The zones target areas with high unemployment and low incomes.
