1941 – 2004

LEWISTON – Dennis C. Spofford, 62, passed away Sunday, Feb. 29, at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 16, 1941, the son of Cleba and Eloise (Gammon) Spofford, he was a life-long resident of Auburn, until he moved to Hebron in 1998. He attended Auburn schools and returned to Edward Little Adult Education in 1995 to complete graduation requirements, receiving an award for “Most Courageous Student.” He served for two years in the U.S. Air Force. He married Beverly Rowe on Aug. 19, 1961.

Before starting the D.C. Spofford Co. in 1969, he was employed at a number of area businesses, including Wing’s Express and the H.L. Getchell Co. He was one of the founders of the L/A Excavating Contractor’s Association and also of the West Auburn School Historical Society.

He served on the Auburn Planning Board for several years and had been a member of the Hebron Planning Board. He had been a columnist for “Business Focus,” a local business newspaper. He had been a member of the East Auburn Baptist Church.

He was one of the “regulars” at Mac’s Variety and later at Roy’s and Rolly’s Diner. Often his St. Bernard or his Newfoundland, “Stumper,” would be there as well, waiting in the truck. His greatest passions in life were reading, local history and politics and above all, talking to people. He was a strong supporter of the Auburn Public Library. He was fond of Johnny Cash, John Wayne, Tom T. Hall and “Lonesome Dove,” and he quoted from them often. “Don’t let the Indians get you while I’m gone!”

Survivors include Beverly Spofford of Hebron; three sons, Matt and his wife, Ann of Auburn, Jonathan and his wife, Kaarina of Hebron and Tom of Auburn; two daughters, Lishia Cochran and her husband, Jerry of Campbell Hill, Ill., and Debbie Wrentzel of Auburn; seven grandchildren, Cristy, Jerry Jr. and Kevin Cochran, Karen and Jeremy Wrentzel, Christopher Spofford and Isabelle Spofford; three great-grandchildren, Tobe, Jasmine and Tyson Cochran; two sisters, Judy Sargent and her husband, David and Katy Caron and her husband, Ray all of Auburn; two brothers, Ron Spofford of Portland and Cleba Spofford Jr. of Durham; several nieces and nephews; and stepmother, Pauline (Spofford) Morris of Florida.
