LEWISTON – The Maine Parent Education Consortium will offer area workshops for parents of children with special needs.

The basic “Parents and Special Ed” curriculum, consisting of “Understanding the IEP/PET Process” and “The Effectively Involved Parent,” will be presented in five locations.

Staff from the Maine Parent Federation and Southern Maine Parent Awareness will make presentations. Morning sessions will provide parents with information and materials to understand the IEP/PET process in Maine and how Maine’s Learning Results and No Child Left Behind affect that process and their children. They will also learn proven techniques for working effectively, as partners, with their children’s school systems.

The afternoon sessions will give parents the opportunity to work on their own children’s IEP’s with practical, hands-on guidance from the presenters.

The following is a list of workshop dates and locations.

Orono and Waterville: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 20.

Belfast and Machias: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 3.

Lewiston: Tuesday and Thursday, May 4 and 6, two evening sessions.

Limited child care and mileage reimbursement will be available and lunches will be provided.
