LEWISTON – Sister Sylvia Genesse will be the speaker at the noon Lenten lecture series on Wednesday, March 17, at St. Joseph’s Church. Genesse will speak in the church hall after the noon Mass.

A native of Auburn, she graduated from Edward Little High School and was employed by Central Maine Power Co. prior to joining the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary.

She received a master’s in education from the University of Maine in Orono and a master’s in theology from St. Michael’s College near Burlington, Vt., with a concentration in pastoral ministry and spirituality. She studied at the Gregorian Institute of Spirituality in Rome.

Genesse taught in Maine and Massachusetts parish schools administered by the Sisters of the Presentation. For 12 years she served at the Generalate in Castelgandolfo, Italy. Genesse is on the staff at Marie Joseph Spiritual Center, Biddeford Pool, and is involved in retreat work.

Rotary guest

LEWISTON – The speaker at the Lewiston-Auburn Rotary Club meeting at noon Thursday, March 18, will be Russ Dillingham, Sun Journal photographer.

Meetings are held at the Ramada Inn and anyone interested in the program or in knowing more about Rotary is invited. The cost of the luncheon is $7.

Garden club

AUBURN – The Woman’s Literary Union Garden Club will meet at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 18, at the clubhouse, 19 Elm St. Susan Hayward will present a program on “Wildflowers of Thorncrag.”

All interested persons are welcome, and members are encouraged to bring a friend. Refreshments will be served. Lois Rousseau is in charge of hospitality.

AUBURN – A special meeting of Chapter 11, Disabled American Veterans, will meet at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 18, at the Army Reserve Center, 1072 Minot Ave. The meeting time and place are new. All monthly meetings will now be held at 2 p.m. on the third Thursday of the month at the Reserve Center.

Sabattus speakers

SABATTUS – Linda Tremblay and Ron Caron of Sabattus will speak on “Haiti’s Children” at 7 p.m. Friday, March 19, at Our Lady of the Rosary Church Parish Center, High Street.

Both have traveled to Haiti with a St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center group to clinics that service the Haitian poor. They will share photos taken on each of their trips. Caron traveled to Haiti in 2002 and Tremblay this year.

The public is invited.

Supper change

WALES – Due to a conflict of local events, the Webster Masonic Temple supper, previously set for March 20, will be moved to Saturday, March 27. The bean and spaghetti meal will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Wales Grange Hall.

The lodge is hosting the supper to support further restoration of the grange hall at 322 Centre Road. Cost will be $5.50 for adults; $3.50, under 12.

LEWISTON – The Holy Cross Senior Citizens will meet from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 21, at the church hall when Robin Andrews, nutrition educator for SeniorsPlus, will be the speaker. She has a bachelor of science degree in food and nutrition science and chemistry. Refreshments will be served.

Contest winner

AUBURN – Corrie Bernatchez, 12, of Auburn, competed with 60 other contestants in the New England Sweetheart Pageant held in Windsor Locks, Conn.

Competing in beauty, casual wear, outfit of choice, swimwear and photogenic, Bernatchez walked away with the Grand Supreme Amateur 11 and up title. She had perfect scores in beauty and photogenic events and also won best eyes.

Bernatchez also had two wins in her bowling league. She placed first in girls singles and in all events at the city tournaments at Sparetime Recreation in Lewiston.
