OXFORD – More streets will be swept of sand this spring now that selectmen have agreed to buy a sweeper.
At Thursday’s meeting, selectmen accepted the bid of H.P. Fairfield in Skowhegan to buy the used sweeper for $19,500.
“We think we’ll be able to do more sweeping for the same amount of money,” said Town Manager Mike Huston. Previously, the town spent around $9,000 by hiring it done, he said.
Also on Thursday, selectmen unanimously elected Floyd Thayer as chairman, replacing David Ivey. Thayer, of East Oxford Road, is serving his first term and runs Thayer Trucking Corp.
Tax anticipation note bids were also opened Thursday. Selectmen went with Oxford Bank & Trust, as they have in the past, even though the quoted interest rate – 1.39 percent – was the same as that bid by Norway Savings Bank.
“We’re used to them,” Huston said of Oxford Bank.
Selectmen set the tax overlay amount at $50,000 to cover the next six months. The tax rate with a $50,000 overlay will be between $9.60 and $9.90 per $1,000 of property value, said Huston. Tax bills are expected to go out by the beginning of April.
The board also approved Mutual Aid Fire Agreement renewals with the towns of Harrison, Naples, Paris, Norway, Mechanic Falls, Poland, Raymond, Otisfield, Casco, Hebron and Minot, along with the city of Auburn.
