POLAND – Excelsior Grange will hold an open house from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 4, at the grange, Harris Hill Road.

Excelsior Grange has been doing community service since 1876. Members have done hundreds of benefit suppers, helped schools, sponsored Good Will Hinkley School, Scouts, orphanages, scholarships, Red Cross and Salvation Army. It opens the building free for public meetings.

Now the membership is aging; one member is in her 90s and still working on suppers. The cost of operating a Grange is expensive and many have had to close.

Excelsior has one of the best upgraded halls in the state. It has a new well, enlarged parking lot, new septic system, new bathrooms, new kitchen, paint, fans and is handicapped accessible, but still can’t attract new members. The group wants to continue charitable work, but needs more people.

Gov. John Baldacci has proclaimed April as state Grange Month.
